Car Ran Out of Fuel in Riyadh: What to Do
The fuel light came on, you pushed your luck, and the engine stopped. The safe order of steps, why you should not walk the highway with a bottle, and when a tow is the smart move.

If your car runs out of fuel in Riyadh, use the remaining momentum to coast fully onto the shoulder, switch on your hazards and get everyone out on the side away from traffic. Then get the car to a fuel station, either by having someone you know bring fuel in a proper approved can, or by having the car carried on a flatbed to the nearest open station.
Running dry feels embarrassing, but it is one of the most common reasons cars stop on Riyadh's ring roads and outbound highways, especially late at night when stations along some routes are far apart. This guide covers the safe steps, why walking the highway is a bad idea, how far the fuel light really lets you go, what running dry can do to the engine, the different rules for hybrids and EVs, and what a tow costs in 2026.
Fuel starvation is a breakdown in which the engine stops because the tank is empty or the fuel pump can no longer pick up fuel, leaving the car without power steering assistance or brake boost after a short time.
The safe order of steps when the engine stops
When the engine stops on a Riyadh road because the tank is empty, you usually get a few seconds of warning: a stutter, a loss of power, then silence. Use those seconds well.
- Signal right and coast. The car will still roll for a while. Steer to the widest part of the shoulder while you still have speed.
- Expect heavy steering and brakes. Once the engine is off, power assistance fades. Press the brake pedal firmly and steadily.
- Hazards on, handbrake on, P selected. If the battery is healthy, hazards will last for hours.
- Get out on the passenger side and move everyone behind the barrier or up the verge.
- Note your exact location. The kilometre marker or the last exit, and your direction.
Do not keep turning the key to try to restart. Each attempt draws on the battery and, on some cars, can strain the fuel pump.
Can I walk to a petrol station from the highway?
Walking to a petrol station from a Riyadh highway is unsafe in most cases, because shoulders are narrow, traffic is fast and stations on outbound routes can be 20 km or more apart.
In October, daytime temperatures in Riyadh still reach the mid-30s, and the reflected heat from the asphalt makes a long walk exhausting, especially for children or older passengers. At night, a pedestrian on the hard shoulder is very hard for drivers to see.
Carrying fuel back in a water bottle is the other problem. Ordinary plastic bottles are not designed for petrol, can leak or split in the heat, and a fuel spill near a hot exhaust is a real fire risk. If fuel must be brought to the car, it should be in a proper approved fuel can and brought by someone driving, not walking.
Long, quiet stretches heading north out of the city are where this happens most at night. The distances between services and safe pick-up points there are covered on the Towing service in Riyadh Qassim Highway page.
How far can you drive after the fuel light comes on?
Most cars can drive roughly 40 to 80 km after the low-fuel light comes on, but the exact range depends on the model, the tank size and how the car is driven.
That range shrinks quickly in Riyadh conditions. Air-conditioning at full power, stop-start traffic in rush hour and high highway speeds all burn fuel faster than the dashboard estimate assumes. The "distance to empty" figure on many cars is an average, and it can drop by 10 km in a few minutes of heavy traffic.
A practical rule for Riyadh is to treat the fuel light as an instruction to refuel at the next station, not as a reserve to stretch.
Can running out of fuel damage my car?
Running out of fuel once is unlikely to cause serious damage to most modern petrol cars, but repeated low-fuel driving can shorten the life of the fuel pump.
- Fuel pump: in many cars the pump sits inside the tank and is cooled by the fuel around it. Running it dry, especially in summer heat, makes it run hot.
- Sediment: the last litres in the tank can carry dirt that ends up in the filter.
- Diesel engines: many need the fuel system to be primed or bled after running completely dry, which a workshop may have to do.
If the car does not restart after refuelling, stop trying after two or three attempts. The problem may be a fuel pump that has failed, and the car should go to a workshop rather than a station.
Hybrids and electric cars: the same problem, different rules
Hybrid and electric cars in Riyadh can run out of energy too, and they need slightly different handling.
A hybrid with an empty tank may move a short distance on battery alone, but most models limit this, and the battery drains quickly. Pull over while you still have control rather than pushing on.
An electric car that runs out of charge needs to reach a charger, and it should not be towed with its drive wheels on the road, because that can damage the motor. It needs to ride fully on a flatbed, the same way we move any EV.
What a tow to a fuel station costs
A tow to a fuel station in Riyadh typically costs 90 to 150 SAR in 2026 for a standard car within 15 km, which covers most stops inside the ring roads.
On outbound highways, where the nearest open station may be further away, the price follows the longer bands: 150 to 250 SAR for 15 to 30 km and from 220 SAR beyond. Night and holiday trips cost the same as daytime.
We do not deliver fuel. We load the car fully on the flatbed and drop it at the nearest open station, or at your home or a workshop if you prefer. Inside the busy southern districts, where stations are close but streets are tight, the way we load and drop is explained on the Towing service in Al Shifa page.
Common mistakes when the tank runs dry
The mistakes that make an empty tank in Riyadh worse are almost always about rushing or pride:
- Stopping in the lane instead of coasting fully onto the shoulder while the car still rolls.
- Walking along the highway in the heat or the dark.
- Carrying petrol in a water bottle.
- Repeatedly cranking the engine and flattening the battery.
- Trusting the "distance to empty" figure in rush-hour traffic.
- Towing an EV or automatic with its wheels on the road.
When to call a professional
A professional tow in Riyadh is the right call when the nearest station is too far to reach safely, nobody can bring fuel in an approved can, the car does not restart after refuelling, or you are stopped on a fast road at night.
Habib Satha Towing provides Flatbed Towing in Riyadh for exactly these moments, carrying the whole car to a station, your home or a workshop. For a car that has stopped for reasons other than fuel, such as overheating or an electrical fault, the steps are on our Breakdown Towing in Riyadh page.
